When a business requires translation services, they often need to communicate quickly and effectively to create local relevance on a global scale. Compass Languages is adept at providing transcreation, translation, and localization services with cultural insight and local relevance, for the intended audience.
We believe the key to effective translation is to ensure that the source content, message, and desired outcomes are not lost-in-translation, but communicated in the most authentic way for the end-user to receive and comprehend the exact same message as the original audience. Our team of 2700 linguists ensures that your content is translated effectively for your target audience in over 200 languages.
Company Consistency in Every Language
A company’s reputation is maintained by being consistent. As a company diversifies into new cultures with new languages, it must assure that terminology and communication style is identifiable to the company’s personality – a unique voice. Compass uses several techniques to assure consistent messaging in every language so that your company’s brand, its unique style, is consistently communicated.
- Glossaries – always applied in translations and systematically evolving to address new concepts
- Style Guides – for each location and language, specific guidance on communication style
- Translation Memory – a database of previous approved translations so that new content is not re-translated with any variations.
Compass Languages can provide excellent tools and Project Managers dedicated to delivering your communication objectives.
Translation Processes Are Becoming Much More Sophisticated and Affordable.
Compass Languages can help you assess the circumstances requiring transcreation, 100% human TEP translation, or the rapidly growing AI-driven machine translation with post-editing (NMT/PE). We can explain the situational applications for all three methodologies and/or assist your organization with any transitions from one methodology to another.
Traditional TEP Translation
Compass Languages signature translation service is 100% human translation utilizing our 7-step ISO 9001:2015 Q.A. process that involves at least two independent professional translators working back and forth to create the best translation product. For the utmost confidence in your content’s translation accuracy, style and readability, insist on a translation process that uses experienced linguists, a solid quality assurance system, and a commitment to consistency via a robust and custom Translation Memory asset dedicated to your content.
Transcreation
A literal translation without sufficient context or translator subject matter expertise will sometimes be irrelevant. Some idioms or expressions in the source language must be completely re-stated in the new language to convey the true meaning or create the expected emotion (laughter, anger, fear, etc.). True localization often relies on the linguist’s ability to transcreate instead of translating to communicate the thought or concept.
Moreover, transcreation plays a vital role when it comes to time constraints on eLearning and multimedia projects. Most often, linguists will expand the number of characters (typical is 10-20%) to capture the message in the new language. Yet, the media type may not be able to manage the extra verbiage (e.g., think of a 30-second commercial). Having linguists with the ability to transcreate will now allow you to meet your time constraints while not worrying about losing the message.
Machine Translation
Machine Translation with Post-editing (MT/PE) is a translation process that is growing in use but has some limitations. Compass Languages has built custom NMT engines (Neural Machine Translation) and has experience in post-editing processes and assessments, so we know the domain limitations, the database training involved, and the expected accuracy of the outputs.
The critical component of NMT translations is the time invested in performing post-editing with an experienced, native-speaking linguist who knows the subject matter. This process will not produce the same accuracy and consistency as our ISO 9001 process utilizing two human linguists, but Compass can incorporate review cycles and Q.A. programs that will bring the final translation quite close to the gold standard. Compass also is able to design edit distance evaluations to assess the evolving effectiveness of the NMT engine as new input is provided.

Compass Languages has built custom NMT engines (Neural Machine Translation) and has experience in post-editing processes and assessments, so we know the domain limitations, the database training involved, and the expected accuracy of the outputs. Our post-editing processes and assessments involve the expertise of native speakers of the target language. Although the bulk of the work is done by a machine, you’ll rest assured that at least two human linguists have reviewed the translation before sending it to you.
Transcreation
While translation seems like a direct process, idioms and expressions can cause confusion with direct translations. In many cases, phrases must be restated entirely to make sense in the target language. Also, translators must consider proper tone, emotion, and connotations. Our linguists have the ability to transcreate allowing you to meet your time constraints while not worrying about losing the message.
Localization: Going Beyond Translation
Sometimes, translation isn’t quite enough to gain a foothold in your target market. To enhance your content for a foreign audience, consider our localization services. Under this offering, the team at Compass Languages will expand upon your translation and add local flair to your content. This process accounts for regional values and common expressions and stays away from anything that may be considered offensive in the target culture. Localization is one of the best ways to build your reputation in a new language and culture.
